Halloween was Kevin’s favorite time of the year. He loved the spooky decorations, the candy, and the excitement that filled the air as October 31st approached. His entire neighborhood seemed to share his enthusiasm, with yards filled with glowing pumpkins, cobwebs, and eerie skeletons hanging from trees. But as he walked down his street, Kevin noticed something strange—Mrs. Kimbly’s house was completely undecorated. It was dark and lifeless, standing out against the otherwise festive neighborhood. Kevin had always known Mrs. Kimbly as the quiet older woman who lived alone. He had helped her with small chores in the past, but she rarely spoke to anyone. Kevin couldn’t understand why she wasn’t getting into the Halloween spirit like everyone else. He decided to offer his help, hoping that maybe she had just forgotten to decorate. However, when he knocked on her door and suggested decorating, Mrs. Kimbly coldly refused and slammed the door in his face. Kevin was shocked but determined not to give up.
The next day, Kevin gathered up his own Halloween decorations—lights, pumpkins, and some spooky props—and quietly decorated her porch while she was inside. He thought that maybe, just maybe, seeing her house lit up with Halloween decorations would change her mind. But as he was finishing, Mrs. Kimbly stormed outside, furious. She demanded to know why Kevin had gone against her wishes, and before he could explain, she smashed the pumpkin he had carefully carved onto the ground. Kevin’s heart sank as he watched the pieces scatter across the porch. He had only wanted to make her Halloween brighter, but it seemed like he had only made things worse. That evening, Kevin couldn’t enjoy Halloween. Dressed in his costume, he found himself sitting on her porch, handing out candy to trick-or-treaters so they wouldn’t prank her undecorated house. When Mrs. Kimbly finally came outside, she apologized for her earlier outburst and explained how lonely she felt during the holidays. Kevin’s simple act of kindness had touched her heart, and by the end of the night, they were sitting together, sharing candy and carving a new pumpkin.
